A

The skin under the eyes is delicate, which is why it sometimes appears sunken and has darker coloring than elsewhere on the face. Aging and health problems play a role in sunken eyes but other factors can contribute, so it may affect younger people as well.

Dehydration

The most common cause of sunken eyes is dehydration, or not having enough water in the body. Consuming too much coffee, soda, and prepackaged drinks may increase production of urine(尿液), which may lead to dehydration.

Vitamin shortages

Shortages of vitamin C, vitamin K, and iron can cause eyes to become sunken. Vitamin C helps with absorbing iron and decreasing bruising(瘀斑), while vitamin K is responsible for blood thickening, causing unhealthy skin. Easy bruising and unhealthy skin will result in sunken eyes.

    Weight loss

Most people tend to lose weight in their face first. Sometimes, the weight loss is sudden enough to make blood vessels(血管)below the eyes easy to see, and the skin clear, producing the appearance of sunken eyes. Sudden weight loss may also cause nutritional shortages, which can lead to sunken eyes.

Not enough sleep or poor quality sleep can cause sunken eyes and a person’s DNA or the habit of smoking can also contribute to sunken eyes. Most cases of sunken eyes relate to the quality of an individual’s nutrition and healthy living. When these causes are corrected, sunken eyes can be resolved without further treatment. This means that causes can be avoided or treated in good time to prevent the recurrence of sunken eyes.

21. What can we do to prevent dehydration according to the text?

A. Refuse coffee.       B. Drink more water.

C. Say no to soft drinks.         D. Have certain drinks less.

22. What will lead to bruising below the eyes?

A. Lack of vitamin K.      B. Water shortages.

C. Lack of vitamin C.        D. Nutritional shortages.

23. Which of the following should be avoided for people losing weight?

A. Pale faces.        B. Sudden weight loss.

C. Clean skin.        D. Narrow blood vessels.

B

On a recent afternoon, some 60 years after they graduated from grammar school, Kathleen Rys, 72, and her sister Lorraine O'Kelly, 70, sat down and had a meal with a classmate, Bruce Smit, 71 for the first time.

In the 1950s, Lorraine and Kathleen Rys' family moved from Chicago to Monee. As new kids at Monee Elementary School, they soon found themselves on the outs with other students.

"I would be with the other guys and see Kathleen walking down the hallway, her head down, holding her books, walking slowly. And all of us guys would be flat against the wall until she passed. Then we'd burst into laughter. How rude is that? It's just crazy." said Smit, a doctor whose wife, Tammy, organized the meeting.

The women said none of the teachers cared about it. "We just kept it to ourselves. " Lorraine said.

Over the years, Tammy Smit said, "Bruce would just start to cry at times. He'd wonder what happened to the sisters, if they landed OK." One day a few weeks ago, Tammy took to the internet and found Mary O'Kelly, Lorraine's daughter, and offered to set up a meeting. The idea of revisiting the pain was not well- received by Kathleen, who had never married, let alone gone on a date. It took some convincing, but Lorraine finally got Kathleen to agree to meet with Bruce.

Bruce broke into tears. "I'm so ashamed, so embarrassed," he said. "But I'm so happy you're still here and that I can finally apologize. " He said he hopes his apology will encourage others to seek forgiveness for the pain they make on others. Lorraine said, "This is a beautiful thing. It's just wonderful that a person from 60 years ago can ask for forgiveness. It's like a miracle to us. It's a healing to us."

24. What can we learn from the first three paragraphs?

A. Kathleen made her classmates afraid of her at school.

B. Kathleen was once hurt by her classmates at school.

C. Bruce Smit asked his wife to organize the meeting.

D. Bruce Smit spoke ill of Kathleen.

25. What does "it" probably refer to in the 4nd paragraph?

A. The guys’ meeting.           B. Kathleen’s slow pace.

C. The guys’ apology.        D. Kathleen’s suffering.

26. How did Kathleen first feel about the meeting?

A. Angry.   B. Excited.   C. Anxious.  D. Unwilling.

27. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. Bruce was embarrassed for his apology.

B. The other guys apologized to the two sisters.

C. Bruce and the two sisters felt a sense of relief.

D. Lorraine thought the apology came a little late.

C

Dolphin (海豚)or not a dolphin? That is the question! You see, there are several types of dolphins. Some are saltwater dolphins while others are river dolphins.

What are the 32 types of dolphins? When people are asking the question, they are actually referring to the saltwater dolphins in oceans and seas. The river dolphins living in fresh water are not included in these species (物種). But what would be the answer in this case if we ask, “Dolphin or not a dolphin?” The answer would obviously be yes. River dolphins still belong to the dolphin family.

Among the 32 types of dolphinssome do not actually wear the word dolphin in their names, such as the tucuxi, while others actually have the word whale as part of their names even if they are not whales but in fact, belong to the dolphin family, for example, the melon-headed whale and the killer whale. So what would be the answer to the question “dolphin or not a dolphin?” in these cases? It would be yes. All these species do belong to the dolphin family.

Another question that people ask is, Are the sea animals that perform at aquariums (水族館)all dolphins? So, it always seems to come back to the question, Dolphin or not a dolphin? Well the answer is no in this case. The sea animals that perform there are not all dolphins. The beluga which people tend to think belong to the dolphin family because they show what seems like a smile, like most dolphins, are in fact a species of the whale family.

Now that you read these facts about dolphins, you probably realize that certain sea animals may appear to be part of the dolphin species and that others seem to be part of the whale family but in either case, it is not obvious and can be surprising when you identify a sea animal as being a dolphin or not a dolphin. That is the question!

28. Which of the following actually belongs to the whale family?

A. The tucuxi.            B. The beluga.

C. The killer whale.        D. The melon -headed whale.

29. What do we know about the majority of the dolphins?

A. They perform for audience.       B. They appear friendly.

C. They look like whales.           D. They live in fresh water.

30. What could be added about dolphins before the last paragraph if you were the author?

A. The living area.                   B. Dolphin training.

C. The eating habits.                 D. Further identification.(證明)

31. This article can be classified as_______.

A. popular science                    B. literary fiction

C. a news report                      D. a travel diary

D

A walk through the galleries of Quebec's Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) places individuals face-to-face with some 43,000 artworks ranging from Chinese ceramics(陶瓷制品)to Inuit sculpture.

While the visiting is an incredible cultural experience, a group of local physicians will soon be able to prescribe(開處方) museum visits as treatment for some illnesses.

"We know that art contributes to neural(神經的)activity," said MMFA director Nathalie Bondil. "What we see is that being in contact with art can really help your well-being."

Hélène Boyer, vice president of a Montreal-based medical association, explains that museum visits have been shown to increase levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter(神經傳導物質) known as the "happy chemical" which helps to lift mood.

According to Boyer, the small increase in hormones(荷爾蒙)associated with enjoying an afternoon of art is similar to that offered by exercise, making museum prescriptions ideal for the elderly experiencing pain that prevents them from regularly joining in physical activity.

The museum visits are designed to improve traditional methods. As Bondil notes, spending time in a peaceful environment can provide a welcome distraction. "What is most important is this experience can help them escape from their own pain," she says. "When you enter the museum, you escape from the speed of our daily life."

"I am convinced that in the 21st century, culture will be what physical activity was for health in the 20th century," said Bondil. " Some people would do well to recall that just in the 19th century, sports were believed to do harm to the body. Just as doctors now prescribe exercise, they will be able to prescribe a visit to the MMFA."

32. What does Hélène Boyer think of museum visits?

A. They can cheer people up.

B. They can reduce physical activity.

C. They can slow down our life pace.

D. They can increase levels of art appreciation.

33. How do museum visits affect people?

A. Stop them centering on pain.

B. Stop them centering on traditional methods.

C. Encourage them not to be absent-minded.

D. Encourage them to slow their steps while walking.

34. What does the last paragraph suggest?

A. Physical activities were popular in the 19th century.

B. Sports are considered to be harmful to the body.

C. Ideas of treating illnesses are changing over time.

D. Doctors prescribe museum visits regularly now.

35. What is the main idea of the text?

A. Museum visits are ideal for the elderly.

B. Happy chemical helps to lift mood.

C. Peaceful environment helps escape pain.

D. Cultural activities will promote(促進) health.

第二節 (共 5 小題每小題 2 分,滿分 10 分)

Why do people take “selfies (自拍)”? Researchers at Syracuse University in New York tried to answer that question.     36

People who post selfies and use editing software to make themselves look better show behavior connected to narcissism (自戀), the Syracuse researchers said. Narcissists are people who think very highly of themselves, especially how they look.     37     Because social media can be superficial (膚淺), it is mostly used to share such unimportant information about their lives.

38     People who post group selfies show a need for popularity and a need to belong to a group, the Syracuse University research found. They said some people feel “peer pressure” to post selfies. And some believe it did not really happen if there is no picture of an event or experience.

Chock said posting selfies on social media is not all that different from what people have done for many years. On trips and special events, our elders used cameras to take photos. Before social media, people would bring back photos to show friends and family.     39     If you are a nice person, you commented about how nice everyone in the photos looked, especially children and the person showing the photos. That was the old way of “clicking” like.     40     People can decide not to look at photos of their friends and family—even if they click “like” or even “love” under the Facebook selfie.

  A. On social media, it is a different experience.

  B. They came up with some surprising answers.

  C. There are other reasons why people post selfies.

  D. You had no choice but to look at them.

  E. Here is how the Syracuse researchers did their study.

  F. For them, social media is a good place to post selfies.

  G. There are no major differences on how often men and women post selfies.

Dear Rick,

How is everything going? I had a five-day trip to London last week. I would like to express my gratitude for your hospitality and kindness when I was in London.

Knowing that you take a great fancy to Chinese culture, especially the Dragon Boat Festival, I would love to introduce it to you. The Dragon Boat Festival, one of the most traditional festivals in China, falls on May 5th in the lunar calendar. People celebrate this festival in memory of Qu Yuan, who was a Chinese poet. Besides, people in China will also hold a variety of activities to honor him, such as dragon boat racing, eating zongzi and so on.

Welcome to China. You will have an unforgettable experience if you come to China before this festival.

    Best wishes.

                                                           Yours sincerely,

                                                                  Li Hua
